BigCommerce SEO Built in the Stencil Theme, Not Just App Settings
We're a UK SEO agency running long-term retainers for BigCommerce stores. Stencil-level schema, faceted navigation control, Core Web Vitals work on Open Checkout, and the BigCommerce-specific technical work most agencies skip in favour of an SEO Manager settings page. Free audit before you commit.
What we do
-
Stencil-level schema markup
BigCommerce ships Product and Article schema by default and most stores stop there. We add FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, Organization and Service schema directly in the Stencil theme files, validated against Google's structured data rules. Schema lives in the Handlebars templates, version-controlled, not bolted on by a third-party app that breaks on the next theme update.
-
Faceted navigation and filter URLs
BigCommerce category pages with Product Filtering enabled generate enormous numbers of parameter URLs. Left unchecked, Google wastes crawl budget on filter combinations nobody searches for. We audit which facets deserve indexable URLs, which need canonicalising back to the parent category, and which should be blocked at robots.txt or via meta robots.
-
Core Web Vitals on Open Checkout
BigCommerce Open Checkout gives you full control over the checkout markup, which is rare for SaaS ecommerce. We use it. LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, CLS under 0.1. Image optimisation through the BigCommerce CDN, lazy loading, preloading critical fonts, removing render-blocking third-party scripts you no longer use.
-
Category architecture and canonicalisation
Category and brand pages do the heavy lifting on a BigCommerce store. We audit category depth, internal linking between siblings, canonical tag handling on paginated results, and where thin tag pages are leaking ranking power. Most BigCommerce stores have 20 to 30 percent of their indexed URLs returning no organic traffic. We fix that.
-
Content and on-page rhythm
Four or more pieces a month: category page rewrites, buyer guides, comparison content, supporting blog posts mapped to commercial keywords. Plus ongoing updates to existing pages, which is where most of the ranking gains come from. Written for buyers, not for word count. Internal linking handled as we publish, not left for a future audit.
-
Reporting tied to revenue
Monthly reports show organic sessions, transactions and revenue from organic, by landing page and by category. Not vanity ranking screenshots. Quarterly strategic review against the roadmap. You see what moved, what didn't, and what we're doing next month. If the data is bad news, we tell you the data is bad news.
How a BigCommerce SEO retainer with us actually runs
Most BigCommerce SEO offers boil down to configuring an app and shipping four AI blog posts a month. That isn't a retainer, it's a subscription to busywork. Here's what real platform-specific work looks like.
-
Free audit
Before any money changes hands. We run a full BigCommerce audit: Stencil theme schema, faceted nav, category architecture, Core Web Vitals, canonical handling, sitemap coverage, indexation issues, and the keywords your store should be ranking for but isn't. You get the audit document whether you sign or not.
-
Foundations: weeks 1 to 4
Technical fixes first. Schema added to the Stencil theme, faceted nav rules applied, canonical tags audited, redirect map cleaned up in the native 301 manager, Core Web Vitals work on the homepage, category pages and Open Checkout. Sitemap submitted, indexation issues resolved. This is the work that compounds, so we do it first.
-
Content and on-page rhythm: month 2 onwards
Four or more pieces of new content per month plus ongoing updates to existing category and product pages. Buyer guides, comparison articles, category page rewrites, supporting blog posts. Mapped to commercial keywords, internally linked as we publish. We also keep iterating on technical fixes as the audit surfaces more.
-
Quarterly strategic review
Every three months we step back. What's ranking, what's converting, what's the keyword landscape doing, where should the roadmap shift. Refreshed Stencil audit, refreshed keyword research, refreshed content plan. This is when we re-prioritise the next quarter's work against what's actually moving revenue.
Why BigCommerce SEO is a different brief
BigCommerce gives you a stronger SEO starting point than most ecommerce platforms. Clean URLs out of the box, server-side rendering, native canonical tag handling, automatic XML sitemaps, native breadcrumbs, meta robots controls, and a 301 redirect manager built into the admin. If you compare that to a generic CMS where you're bolting on five plugins to get the basics right, BigCommerce already does the foundations properly. That's the good news. The bad news is most BigCommerce stores never get past those foundations, because the next layer of work is platform-specific and generalist SEO agencies don't do it.
The real BigCommerce SEO work happens in the Stencil theme. Stencil is BigCommerce's theming engine, Handlebars templates with SCSS, and almost all of the schema markup, internal linking patterns, breadcrumb behaviour and category page rendering lives in the theme files. A generalist agency will configure the SEO Manager settings and call it done. We get into the Stencil templates and add the schema types BigCommerce doesn't ship by default: FAQPage on guide content, Service schema where it makes sense, Organization schema sitewide, BreadcrumbList properly nested. This work compounds, it survives theme updates if you do it in custom templates rather than core, and it's the difference between a store that ranks for buyer-intent queries and one that doesn't.
The other BigCommerce-specific brief is faceted navigation. Product Filtering on category pages is powerful for shoppers and a crawl-budget disaster for Google if you leave it on default. We audit which filter combinations should be indexable (size, colour where there's real search volume), which should canonicalise back to the parent category, and which should be blocked. We also handle the related issues most BigCommerce stores have: thin tag pages, duplicate brand-and-category URLs, and unintended filter URLs leaking PageRank. If your store runs on the BigCommerce multi-storefront feature for cross-border trading, we'll also sort out hreflang and canonical setup between the UK and other regional storefronts, which is fiddly and easy to get wrong.
Two final pieces. First, BigCommerce Open Checkout gives you full Core Web Vitals control over the checkout, which is rare in SaaS ecommerce, and we use it: LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, image optimisation through the BigCommerce CDN. Second, if you're running a headless setup on Catalyst with a Next.js frontend, the SEO brief shifts again: SSG versus SSR trade-offs, sitemap generation, edge caching, and making sure the rendering pipeline doesn't break what BigCommerce gives you natively. If you want the broader picture of how our SEO retainers work across platforms, the general SEO services page covers the methodology. If you're weighing platforms, our Shopify SEO and WordPress SEO pages have honest comparisons. And if you need development work alongside SEO, our BigCommerce web development team handles theme builds and migrations.

Frequently asked questions
Is BigCommerce SEO different from regular SEO?
The principles are the same, the execution is platform-specific. BigCommerce ships with strong native foundations (clean URLs, server-side rendering, native canonicals, automatic sitemaps) so you don't need to fix what a generalist CMS forces you to fix. But the real work, Stencil-level schema, faceted nav control, category architecture, Open Checkout Core Web Vitals, multi-storefront hreflang, doesn't get done unless someone knows the platform. That's the difference.
How much does it cost?
All-inclusive of the work that moves organic revenue. No setup fee and no hidden tiering. The only thing not included is backlink building, which we'll explain below.
Do you work on other ecommerce platforms too?
Yes. We run the same retainer model for Shopify and WordPress/WooCommerce stores. The pricing is identical, the methodology is identical, the platform-specific work changes. If you're not sure which platform suits your business, we'll give you an honest answer. We don't push BigCommerce onto stores it doesn't fit, and we don't push migrations away from BigCommerce that we'd profit from.
How long until I see results?
Technical fixes from weeks 1 to 4 can move things quickly, especially if your Stencil theme has missing schema or your faceted nav is wasting crawl budget. Content-driven ranking gains usually start landing in months 3 to 6 and compound from there. Anyone promising results in 30 days for an ecommerce site in a competitive UK SERP is either lucky or lying. We'd rather set the expectation honestly than oversell.
Do you build backlinks?
No, and we're honest about why. Real backlink building, digital PR, outreach, getting genuine editorial coverage, is a separate discipline and a separate cost structure. The cheap version, paid link networks and PBNs, is what tanks BigCommerce stores when Google catches up. If you want backlink work, we'll recommend specialists we trust. Everything else that moves organic revenue is included in the retainer.
Do you audit my Stencil theme?
Yes, that's where most of the platform-specific work lives. The free audit covers schema markup in the theme files, category and product page templates, breadcrumb rendering, internal linking patterns, and Handlebars partials that affect SEO. If we sign, we either work in your existing theme or set up a child theme so updates don't wipe out the work. We refresh the Stencil audit quarterly as part of the retainer.
Do you handle faceted navigation and filter URLs?
Yes, this is one of the bigger wins on most BigCommerce stores. We audit your Product Filtering setup, identify which filter combinations have real search demand and should be indexable, canonicalise the rest back to the parent category, and block crawl waste at robots.txt or meta robots level. Done properly, this can pull 20 to 30 percent of indexed-but-useless URLs out of Google and concentrate ranking power where it belongs.
Do you work with Catalyst or headless BigCommerce setups?
Yes. Headless BigCommerce, usually Catalyst with Next.js, changes the SEO brief: SSG versus SSR rendering trade-offs, sitemap generation in the frontend, edge caching, making sure schema renders in the initial HTML rather than after hydration. If you're already headless we'll audit the frontend's SEO behaviour as part of the free audit. If you're considering going headless, we'll give you an honest view on whether it'll help or hurt your organic performance.
Can you handle multi-storefront SEO?
Yes. BigCommerce multi-storefront for cross-border UK brands raises hreflang setup between regional storefronts, canonical tag handling across stores, and country-specific keyword targeting. We've seen multi-storefront setups where the UK store was canonicalising to the US store and tanking its own rankings. We audit and fix that as part of the retainer.
Is there a contract lock-in?
No. 30-day notice, that's it. We don't run 12-month contracts because if our work isn't earning its keep you should be able to walk. The flip side is SEO compounds, so a 3-month trial doesn't usually do justice to the work. We'd rather you stay because the data says you should stay, not because a contract says you have to.
