Custom Shopify App Development for UK Brands
Custom Shopify apps, Functions and API integrations for UK brands, built by a senior team. What we do
-
Custom apps, not another subscription
A custom app is installed on your store and yours alone: no App Store listing, no public review queue, no monthly per-seat fee to a vendor who might sunset it. We build the thing your business actually does, against the Admin GraphQL API, with proper OAuth, webhooks and error handling. When an off-the-shelf app genuinely does the job we will tell you that instead of quoting a build.
-
Shopify Functions for pricing and shipping logic
Discount rules, shipping method filtering, payment method customisation and cart validation now run as Functions on Shopify's own infrastructure, which means they execute server side at checkout speed rather than as a script in the browser. Tiered trade pricing, bundle logic, minimum order rules and postcode-based delivery restrictions all live here.
-
Checkout and admin UI extensions
Checkout UI extensions are how the checkout gets customised now, rather than the old approach of editing checkout.liquid. Delivery instructions, gift messaging, age verification, custom upsells, B2B purchase order fields. We also build admin extensions so your team runs the process inside Shopify admin instead of a spreadsheet beside it.
-
Integrations into the systems you actually run
Shopify rarely lives alone. We wire it into the ERP, the warehouse or 3PL, the ePOS, the accounting package and the CRM, with idempotent syncs, retry handling and a log you can read when something upstream goes down. Stock, orders, customers and invoices moving on their own, with a clear answer when a record does not arrive.
-
Built to Shopify's own standards
Embedded apps built with App Bridge and Polaris so they look and behave like Shopify rather than an iframe someone bolted on. Mandatory compliance webhooks handled, API versioning tracked so a platform release does not quietly break you, performance kept inside Shopify's budgets. If the app is going public, we build to the Built for Shopify criteria from the start.
-
Public App Store apps when you want a product
If the goal is a commercial app rather than an internal tool, that is a different build: billing API, multi-tenant data model, onboarding, support surface and the app review process. We have opinions about which ideas survive review and which do not, and you will hear them on the scoping call rather than in month three.
How a Shopify app build with us actually runs
Fixed price, fixed scope, fixed timeline. Most custom app builds run four to eight weeks from kickoff to launch, depending on how many external systems are involved and how well documented they are.
-
Scoping call
A 45-minute call to work out what the app has to do, what it has to talk to, and whether it should be an app at all. Plenty of jobs are better solved with metafields, Flow, a Function on its own, or an existing app configured properly. You leave with a straight recommendation, including the ones that do not involve paying us to build something.
-
Technical brief and fixed quote
Within 48 hours you get a written brief covering the data model, the API surface, the integration points, the failure cases and what happens to in-flight data when something goes down. Alongside it, a fixed-price quote and a timeline. If a third-party system has a weak or undocumented API, you will be told before you commit, not after.
-
Build in a development store
Everything is built and tested against a development store seeded with realistic data, so nothing touches live orders until it has been through its paces. You get access from the first week and see progress as it lands, rather than a reveal at the end.
-
QA, edge cases and your sign-off
We test the boring failures that actually happen in production: the API timing out mid-sync, duplicate webhooks, a partial refund, a cancelled order, a product deleted while a job is queued. Your team gets a staging walkthrough and signs off before anything is installed on the live store.
-
Launch, monitoring and handover
Installed on the live store, monitored through the first days of real traffic, with logging and alerting wired up so a silent failure does not stay silent. You get the repository, the documentation and a walkthrough. Ongoing support is a retainer if you want one, not a condition of the build.
What custom Shopify app development actually looks like in 2026
Most Shopify stores do not need a custom app. They need three or four good ones configured properly. The stores that do need one usually reach that point the same way: the business does something specific, no listing on the App Store does it quite right, and the workaround has grown into a stack of subscriptions, exported spreadsheets and one person who knows how it all fits together.
A custom app is the point where that stops. It is installed on your store only, it is not listed publicly, it does not go through app review, and it does exactly one set of jobs: yours. The trade-off is honest. You are swapping a monthly fee and someone else's roadmap for a build cost and a system you own.
Where the platform now expects custom work to live
Shopify has moved a lot of customisation out of the theme and into defined extension points, and the important practical consequence is that logic which used to be a script in the browser now runs on Shopify's own infrastructure.
- Shopify Functions handle discounts, shipping method filtering, payment customisation, cart transforms and delivery customisation. This is where trade pricing tiers, bundle rules, minimum order values and postcode delivery restrictions belong.
- Checkout UI extensions are how the checkout is customised, replacing the old practice of editing checkout.liquid. Delivery notes, gift messaging, age checks, purchase order fields for B2B.
- Admin UI extensions put your process inside Shopify admin, so the team is not alt-tabbing to a spreadsheet to complete an order.
- The Admin GraphQL API and webhooks carry everything else: the syncs, the automations and the integrations into whatever else the business runs on.
Integration is usually the real project
When a brand asks for a Shopify app, the requirement underneath it is often integration. Stock that is accurate because the warehouse said so. Orders that reach the 3PL without anyone re-keying them. Invoices that land in the accounting system. Trade customers who see their own pricing because the ERP holds it.
That work is less about Shopify than about the other end. A well-documented API makes it straightforward. A legacy system with a nightly CSV drop and no sandbox does not, and it changes the estimate. We look at the other end during scoping and tell you which of those two you have before you commit to anything.
Custom app or public app
A custom app serves one store, skips app review, and can be built and installed quickly. A public app is a product: multi-tenant, billed through Shopify's Billing API, subject to review, and needing onboarding, support and a roadmap. Both are legitimate, and the cost profiles are nothing alike. Most UK brands who come to us want the first and describe it as the second.
What we will talk you out of
A build is not always the answer. Metafields and metaobjects cover a lot of structured content. Shopify Flow handles a surprising amount of automation with no code. Sometimes the existing app is fine and was simply configured badly. We would rather lose a build and keep the relationship than take money for something you did not need, and the scoping call is where that gets decided.
App development sits alongside the rest of what we do on Shopify. If the storefront is the constraint, that is Shopify web design. If visibility is, that is Shopify SEO. If you are earlier than all of it and weighing platforms, start with ecommerce web development.

Frequently asked questions
What is a custom Shopify app, and do I need one?
A custom app is built for your store alone. It is not listed on the Shopify App Store, it does not go through public app review, and it does only what you need it to do. You need one when the business does something specific that no existing app handles properly, or when you are paying several subscriptions and still exporting spreadsheets to make them work together. If an off-the-shelf app genuinely covers the job, we will say so on the scoping call.
How much does a custom Shopify app cost?
Every build starts with a free scoping call and a fixed-price quote sized to the work, delivered within 48 hours of the call. No hourly rates, no scope-creep invoices, you know the budget before any code is written. Cost is driven mostly by how many external systems are involved and how well documented their APIs are. A self-contained Function or a single admin extension is a small piece of work. A two-way ERP integration with reconciliation and error handling is not.
How long does a Shopify app build take?
Four to eight weeks from kickoff to launch for most custom apps. Self-contained work such as a discount Function or a checkout extension lands at the shorter end. Anything syncing two ways with an ERP, a warehouse system or an ePOS lands at the longer end, because the integration testing is the bulk of the job. Public App Store apps run longer because of the review process. The timeline goes into the quote.
Can a custom app replace apps we currently pay for?
Often, yes, and it is one of the more common reasons brands call us. Several overlapping subscriptions, each doing part of a job, with monthly costs that have quietly grown. We audit what is installed, what it actually does and what it costs annually, then tell you honestly which ones are worth keeping. Consolidation is only worth doing when the numbers work, and sometimes they do not.
Do we own the code?
Yes. The repository is yours, handed to your team or your next developer on request, with documentation written for that handover from the start rather than assembled at the end of a relationship. No proprietary framework, no agency-owned licence, nothing you would have to rebuild if you moved on. Ongoing support is an optional retainer, not a condition of getting your own code.
Where does the app run, and who hosts it?
It depends on the type. Shopify Functions and checkout UI extensions run on Shopify's infrastructure, so there is nothing to host. Embedded apps that need a server, a database or scheduled jobs run on hosting we set up, typically a managed platform sized to the workload, and it can sit in your own account so you are never locked to ours. Running costs are set out in the quote so there are no surprises after launch.
Can you integrate Shopify with our ERP, warehouse or accounting system?
Yes, and this is the most common reason for a build. Stock levels, orders, customers, invoices and trade pricing moving between Shopify and the system of record, with retries, idempotency and logging so a failed sync is visible rather than silent. The scale of the job depends almost entirely on the other system. We review its API during scoping and tell you what we find before you commit.
Do we need Shopify Plus for this?
Usually not. Custom apps, Functions, the Admin API and admin extensions are available across Shopify tiers. Plus matters for checkout UI extension depth, B2B at scale, multiple storefronts and higher API limits. If your requirement genuinely needs Plus we will say so, and if it does not we are not going to encourage an upgrade you do not need.
Can you take over an app another developer built?
Often, yes. We start with a paid review of the code, the API version it targets and how it authenticates, then give you a written assessment of what it would take to maintain or extend it. Occasionally the honest answer is that a rebuild costs less than the repair, and you will get that in writing with the reasoning rather than as an assertion.
What happens when Shopify releases a new API version?
Shopify versions its APIs and retires older ones on a published schedule, so an app that is never touched will eventually break. On a support retainer we track version changes and migrate ahead of the deadlines. Without a retainer you still own the code and the documentation, and we will flag known upcoming changes at handover so nothing arrives as a surprise.
