Shopify adds Meta as an AI channel, on by default

Released on , Meta now sits alongside the other AI channels in Agentic Storefronts inside the Shopify admin, and products are shared with Meta by default through Shopify Catalog. Read the Shopify Changelog release note here.

Agentic Storefronts is the part of the Shopify admin that governs how a store's products are exposed to AI shopping surfaces: the assistants and agents that answer a buying question directly rather than handing the shopper a list of links. Shopify gave it a dedicated dashboard in May, which we covered when Agentic Storefronts moved into its own admin section.

The substance here is not that Meta has been added to that list. It is that sharing is already on unless a merchant turns it off, so every Shopify store has a decision in front of it and doing nothing is one of the answers.

How it works

Shopify's changelog entry sets out four things. Meta appears in the AI channel list within Agentic Storefronts. Products are shared with Meta by default through Shopify Catalog. Access can be managed separately for Catalog and for direct checkout. Performance for Meta can be viewed in the agentic settings.

The split between Catalog access and direct checkout access is the part worth pausing on. They are two permissions rather than one, so a merchant can take one position on whether products are visible on a Meta surface and a separate position on whether a sale can complete without the buyer ever reaching the store. Beyond those four points the announcement is brief: it does not name the specific Meta surfaces involved, the markets covered, or the rollout schedule, so the only reliable check is your own admin.

Who this changes things for

For a direct-to-consumer brand chasing reach, the default is probably welcome. Meta surfaces are already where a large share of product discovery happens, and a distribution point that needs no feed build, no app install and no maintenance is cheap incremental exposure.

For a brand with selective distribution agreements, the calculation is different. If a supplier contract restricts where products may be listed, or a wholesale relationship depends on not sitting next to a competing stockist, automatic catalogue sharing is the kind of thing that gets noticed after it has happened. The same applies to licensed goods where the licence names the permitted channels.

What this means for UK merchants

The first task is to look. Open Agentic Storefronts, confirm whether Meta is listed, and check the Catalog and direct checkout settings against what the business actually wants. With no rollout detail published, that is the only way to establish where a given store currently stands.

The second is product data. An AI channel works from whatever the merchant has written. When a product is read out by an assistant rather than browsed on a collection page, the title, description and attributes carry the whole weight of the pitch. That is the same discipline behind Shopify SEO: accurate, specific, complete product content, written for someone who cannot see the page. Thin product content is usually a template problem before it is a copy problem, which is where Shopify web design work has to start.

Third, this is another step in Shopify moving control from the store level to the channel level. The Spring 26 Edition did the same with pricing and availability, which we set out in our rundown of the Spring 26 Edition changes that matter to UK merchants. Configuration that varies channel by channel is now normal on Shopify, and it needs an owner.

Practical considerations

Rollouts of this kind are gradual, so Meta being absent from an admin today does not mean it will be absent next week. Re-check rather than concluding a store is unaffected. Treat early performance reporting with caution as well: a new reporting surface is sparse at first, and agentic activity is hard to attribute cleanly against paid social already running in the same account.

If a store carries a contractual constraint on where its products may appear, settle it before the rollout arrives rather than after. Switching sharing off later does not retract a listing that has already been seen.

Measuring that activity got harder in the same month: Shopify has since changed how it counts sessions and filters bot traffic in Analytics, which you can read about in our note on the Shopify Analytics session measurement update.

FAQ

Is Meta product sharing switched on automatically in Shopify?

Yes. Shopify states that products are shared with Meta by default through Shopify Catalog, so a merchant who does not want that has to change the setting in Agentic Storefronts.

Where do I find the Meta AI channel settings?

In the Shopify admin under Agentic Storefronts, where Meta is now listed alongside the other AI channels. Catalog access, direct checkout access and Meta performance are all found in the agentic settings.

Can I share products with Meta but not allow checkout there?

Shopify describes Catalog access and direct checkout access as separately manageable, so the two can be set independently. Confirm the exact options in your own admin, as the announcement does not detail them.

Does this affect my Facebook and Instagram sales channel?

The announcement does not say. It covers Meta being added to the AI channel list inside Agentic Storefronts, a different surface from the established Facebook and Instagram sales channel. Treat them as separate until Shopify documents a link.

What should a UK merchant do first?

Open Agentic Storefronts, check whether Meta is present and how Catalog and direct checkout are set, then decide whether automatic sharing fits the brand's distribution agreements. Review product titles and descriptions too, since that is what an AI channel reads.

When does this reach every store?

Shopify has not published a rollout schedule. The change was announced on 8 September 2026 and arrives in stages, so re-check the admin rather than assuming a store is out of scope.
